Mural by Claude Buckley of the Battle of Waxhaw
Tarleton's Quarter
Tarleton's Quarter
by Claude Buckley
5 x 7 feet, acrylic on canvas, 2013. Private collection, Lancaster, SC

The Battle of Waxhaw was pivotal in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution in that it turn-coated the southern states. Tarleton's Legion butchered the poorly commanded 3rd Virginia Infantry thinking that their commander had been shot...his horse got shot and he went down. Some 385 patriots were viciously put under the sabers of the well seassoned New York Volunteers of the British Legion. Colonist against colonist. During the War Between the States the Confederates would yell "Tarleton's Quarter...show no mercy!"
